The Role of Fate in Bollywood Movies

“It is not in the stars to hold our destiny but in ourselves.” (William Shakespeare)

Fate is the most controversial topic among the people of the all around the world. Some people are of the opinion that fate is most like destiny and we cannot change it by ourselves. But the people who say such things have an insufficient knowledge. They don’t know about the truth that life is itself an opportunity to avail the golden achievements and make our fate. The questions that arise in our minds are that if our fate has already been written then what there will be the purpose of our Dua or prayer? If Allah has destined and decided all the things as kismet for us then where our Duas and prayers will stand?

To complement these questions with the reality, I must say that every man just wishes and Allah (the creator) creates. We have our own wills that we make or create the things with the help of our third eye. There are two physical eyes in our body but we can also use our third eye to see the things that is obviously related to our spirituality. There are various visions and supervisions about our destiny.

According to Islamic teachings, the Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H.) has just stated to discriminate the idea of fate and destination as, “Verily a man is deprived of a provision (that was written for him) because of a sin that he commits; only supplication changes destiny; and only righteousness can increase the life span.”

With this Hadith, the idea of changing the fate by the prayer of the people is clear now. It is clear that one can change one’s destiny by doing good deeds. It is our sin that can be a cause to reduce all our sustenances. It has declared that our future is in our hands and had not written in the stones.

On the other side, the films like Slumdog Millionaire, has opened new ways to think over it. In this movie, when the suspicious inspector has come to know about the cheating of Jamal then he asks, “How could a slumdog know the answer to those questions?” The answer that he replied was ‘destiny’. He said, “I knew I’d find you in the end. It’s our destiny.” This movie has rocked the Bollywood industry with the rising questions like fate.

The innovative directors as well as filmmakers have just made such films that are often based on the themes like fate and destiny. The male and female characters in the movies portray their way of life in an illustrative manner that can be enough to depict the incidents, the protagonists have to face in the films. The Indian films can change the fate of their characters in order to show the reality.

Some people believe that fate is like fatalism and both are the similar genres but it is not so. According to the philosophies of the philosophers that fatalism is like an amalgamation of fate and scientific dogma. Bertrand Russell has written a number of essays that most of them are based on his religious as well as scientific philosophies. According to him, “Religion is something left over from the infancy of our intelligence, it will fade away as we adopt reason and science as our guidelines.”

There are also various definitions about fatalism such as,

“Fatalism accounts for life as a whole. Whatever happens can be fit within the large generality of individuation, or my journey, or growth. Fatalism comforts, for it raises no questions. There's no need to examine just how events fit in.”
― James Hillman.

“We are forced to fall back on fatalism as an explanation of irrational events (that is to say, events the reasonableness of which we do not understand).”
― Leo Tolstoy

To conclude the above discussion into a nutshell, we can say that fate is not wholly and solely reason to shape the destiny of the person rather it also includes the prayers and Duas of the people. Indian movies have participated in this regard not only by creating such themes of the plots but the new video songs as well. The innovative directors and producers have made such movies to bring the protagonists to meet with their dooms as well as destination such as Fanaa, Kyon Ki, Slumdog Millionaire, Bajrangi Bhaijaan etc.
